Selection Process is matching the requirements with of the job with the individual candidate’s profile.
Resume is self promotion document by the individual which is used by the Organization to match with their requirements. FROM CANDIDATE POINT OF VIEW, THE OBJECTIVE IS GET THE JOB AND IT IS FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE SAME. ITS PRUPOSE IS TO MOVE TO THE SECOND STEP I.E. GETTING AN INTERVIEW MEETING.
Resume should therefore be customized for each job to present your self in best possible manner.
Before customizing the resume, the candidate should find out
- The job description and person profile which will match with the job.
- Skills required for the job.
- Cultural fitment aspects.
- Any other trait the organization may be looking for.
A candidate is selling his services. A product marketer knows that we for selling the product, BOTH PRODUCT AND PACKAGING HAS TO BE GOOD. SIMILARLY A RESUME HAS TO BE GOOD BOTH IN ITS CONTENT AND PRESENTATION,
A GOOD RESUME THEREFORE SHOULD HAVE GOOD PRESENTATION AND ALSO BRING OUT PRECISELY AND PROMINENTLY THE ASPECTS WHICH THE ORGANIZATION WOULD BE LOOKING FOR IN THE RESUME.
Some of the suggestions are as under:
- Customize content which matches the job requirements.
- Prioritize the content of your resume.
- Some pointers for the content.
- Analyze ad and job description to identify.
- Key words used by the organization.
- Apparent and hidden needs of the organization.
- Design the resume to meet the aforesaid.
- Use Titles and Headings that Match the Job.
- Market the skills you possess : indicating how useful these would be in job.
- Quantify and Use power words.
- Create an image that matches your salary expectations.
- Use chronological order that suits you best; i.e. it highlights your USPs and underplays the weaknesses : do not hide/miss any issue, e.g.
- If academics are your USP, start with academics and if experience is your strength, write academics below.
- If your current organization is strong, start with the current assignment and if initial organizations have better brand equity, start from the beginning.
- If your current assignment, matches the requirements, detail it in the initial stages and if your total experience matches and not any particular assignment, then write the skills/experience collective and give the organizations worked i.e. do not give assignment wise details.
- If age is your weakness, write it at the bottom.
- If you have a gap in the employment, explain it in an impressive manner but in very concise words to take minimum space.
- Presentation should be such that it should look attractive, impressive and not shallow. It should be easy to read and not create strain on the reader.
- Do spell/language/grammar checks very carefully and thoroughly.
Each resume is a peculiar case and hence generalizations are not possible desirable. These are some pointers.
